Bad news on the cat front - Kirby, our 18 y.o. cat, had a 2-3 min. seizure Sunday evening. She recovered okay, but of course we took her to the vet the next day. The bloodwork just came back, and in the absence of any changes in her liver/blood sugar/thyroid/etc. levels the probably diagnosis is a brain tumor. An MRI would confirm that, but won't change any possible treatment unless we decide to opt for surgery. We've never been ones to skimp on cat care - Gaia was easily an $8k investment during her problems in 1999 - but she was about 13 then, with no other problems, and lived until 2002. Kirby is 18 now, with compromised kidney function. She has put on 3/4 lb (a good thing) since having all her teeth removed in February, and her kidney function seems stable, but there's no way to predict how quickly that could change. So for now we keep a "seizure log" of when, how long, any symptoms before, how long to recover. If they start to come closer than 6 weeks apart, or last longer than 5-7 minutes, or cluster repetitively, we go back for anti-seizure medicine (phenobarbital or potassium bromide) and a neurological consult, and decide what else, if anything, to do....
